    Arma 3 Modset Update

It has been four months since the last modset update and we need to breathe some new life into it. We have this time chosen to not add any new gear mods, but we focussed on maps and FW mods. The first server will be changed to the new modset on the 7th of May. Until that time, if you are curious about some of the new jets or maps, you are free to check it all out on the second server. NOTE! The second server is already set to the new modset.

Important note on VCOM and Serverside mods
One big change compared to the previous modset is the use of serverside mods. Serverside mods do not need to be added locally to be functional and will therefore not be included in the collection or the preset document. This also counts for VCOMAI. If you want to Zeus using VCOM AI, you can run it locally. But if you don't want the AI to use VCOM, don't enable VCOM on startup. The AI will only use VCOM if you run it yourself as the Zeus, or they will use another AI mod like bCombat or ASR3 if you got that loaded. VCOM being loaded on the server means that only scripted missions will have VCOM enabled by default. If you make a scripted mission, there are certain things you can do to stop VCOMAI being used in the missions. For more information on that, you can ask in the #arma_editor channel on discord, or check the VCOM AI mod page.

    This is the full changelog:

Removal of TRYK? That took me by surprise given how good of a mod it is.

any reason why TRYK is being removed? I'm guessing it's the NVGs.

Losing TRYK is gonna be bad. Everything that looked half decent will be gone. :(

TRYK might have had a decent variety of special forces uniforms, but its visual quality was below average across the board. What you will all be missing is the few unbalanced highlights, mostly super light (and full screen) NVGs.

I'm more concerned about the fixed wing changes. That F/A-18 mod is a definite downgrade compared to Firewill stuff, all for the sake of having a twoseater... except the F-16D totally works, at least since his latest wave of bugfixes. Create a laser des with the Firewill menu, change its ownership with the ACE interface (player or zeus), done.

Losing Tryk? Why? its got a lot of uniforms that we do use, plus the shemaghs in the NVG slot i see almost everyone use because it looks good, not for the NVG's themselves.

Some new maps are definitely a breath of fresh air, assuming we have templates for them this time since some of the last ones got taken out without even being used (if I remember correctly), and taking of Dingor, Lingor and Abramia I can live with easily (remember that those CAN be brought back later).

TRYK however I don't quite get. It is true the NVGs are better, but not that much better than the Wide ones, in no way OP and these days I don't see too many use them anymore. TRYK had some good 'basic' vests and helmets as well as some good usefull camos to go with a lot of things and as discussed in todays mission, I haven't been in a squad that doesn't use SOME TRYK thing in their load out since it came out (and I don't mean the NVGs).

Still, let's give this a try and do remember that things can be brought back and taken out so this is in no way final.

Ofcourse abramia/lingor/dingo were great maps, and they still are, but we've been using them for ages. And because not everyone wants an endless modpack size, I applaud the CM's decision to make room for new maps (which inevitably means some other grinded maps will have to be archived temporarily). Half of the newly added maps are completely unknown to me so I look forward to the new mods (and jets).

Both the NEW! collection and the preset file are now in the post. Note that the collection has been moved to the official FK steam account, and we will be moving the FK-ACE upload to that account as well. So be aware that on May 7th you will need to subscribe to the new ACE upload if you want to stay up to date.

Don't players need the urban rappelling one since it adds few more things you can do with it?

I agree with the tryk removal. I use the nvgs because there available but it's one of the most immersion breaking things in the game. And keeping it just so people can wear an extra rag on their face (something I also did)  doesn't make sense. I'm glad it's going but we could've found a new equipment mod to replace some of the backpacks and vest well be losing. Gone are actual black vests :'(

The immersion breaking would only effect the person who chose to bring them, nobody else would be affected. When you look through NVG's  IRL you technically have full screen view in effect so the black edges some of the googles have are in my opinion immersion breaking in their own way as it exaggerates the effect, it's hard enough to get true feeling of situational awareness when most of your screen is cluttered with black and it being a video game. I feel we lose out on immersion by not having those extra bits of gear that add a little bit of personality to everyone's character but it won't effect gameplay so it's not the end of the world.

The new maps added are a great feature to the update and will make for interesting new missions so delighted to see that.

For the moment they are the same version. The new one that has been uploaded by FKGaming will be kept up to date.

Have you ever worn nods? because they definitely limit your field of view. I think gen 3s are like 45°. If you want to simulate the real-life "full-screen effect" those areas around the goggles that for us are just a darker shade of green, should be replaced with complete blackness.

I'm all for changes that make the game more challenging and realistic.

Yeah sure, and recently I've started to. just as I've started to leave my 12 xtra mag comfort zone. I just think its a positive change and I think a lot of people are upset about a forced change to an unrealistic FOV (which btw, the other one is still unrealistic). Or their upset about not being able to wear 3 pairs of goggles.

Yes I have more times than I can count, I mostly used kite sights and mono's and yes your field of view is restricted in that you lose a lot of peripheral vision but that is already lost due to the fact we are using monitors and not a set of eyes so the black edges overlay doesn't feel right to me plus the fact that the nvgs now have the grain effect makes the edges more of a handicap. I think if the edges where replaced with a more grainy and pixelated affect it would add a bit more realism to it so you only had decent focus and clarity to your front.

Maybe yeah, I can see your point. I definitely agree the area inside your FOV should be relatively clear. all I was trying to say is that I personally like it. and that I hear a lot of people being really upset about the nvg changes and I think that their frustration is wildly disproportionate to how insignificant the change actually is.

Clearly never worn a set of monocular or binocular NVG's then. It's not in "full screen" at all you get incredibly bad tunnel vision in the single tube(monocular) NVG's and a little bit of it in double tube(binocular) NVG's. The black edges are there because you would still be able to see past the outter edges of the tubes when set up correctly for your eyes, the modern single tube NVG's only cover one eye any way so one eye would still see everything as it would with out the NVG. Best way to replicate what you happen is hold 1-2 used toilet paper tides about an inch from your eyes.

A nice video that touches on the NVG discussion ...

    • Jump to 1m 37s to see what Mullet was talking about with the toilet paper tides
    • Jump to 3m 41s to see why the black borders are around the screen are slightly transparent
    • Jump to 5m 20s if you like to complain about how ACE NVGs are way too bad / dark ... You know ... if there is no light there is nothing to amplify
